ORIGINS
stainless steel is in our skyscrapers. it's in our cookware, the blades on my figure skates. it's everywhere—the most recycled material in the world. and increasingly, it's in jewelry, often in streetwear and costume pieces that are cutting edge in their design, but not quite right for the courtroom.
CUSTOMS, MERCH, & SLOW-FASHION JEWELRY
the vast majority of my work is in customs. whether it be individual pieces or branded merch unlike anything else out there, I work at a wide variety of scales and have flexible pricing & payment plans based on the scale of your project, your particular needs (e.g., additional components I need to order), and nontraditional factors such as where your brand is in its life cycle.
to get the process started, fill out the custom form at the link below. all merch orders require an initial phone consult with me so I can get a feel for your brand and your project.
VISION
CONSCIOUS OBJECT is disruptive. most jewelry brands in this niche source their materials from the same manufacturers and wholesalers whose primary concern is cost cutting, with things designed to be consumed and thrown away quickly. what's advertised as stainless steel isn't always what it appears. and there are no laws or regulations forcing transparency where it isn't voluntarily given, and no real protections against unwittingly purchasing products of forced, exploitative, or otherwise underpaid labor.
CONSCIOUS OBJECT does better. like the heavy music scene that raised me, I have no interest in doing what every other brand in my niche is doing. I follow no rulebook or formula, and I'm transparent about my materials and labor costs so you can see why things are priced the way they are. my goal is to create classic, quality pieces that will last a lifetime, and that you will feel good about wearing. no compromise.
VALUES
sustainability isn't a buzzword to me. it's at the core of my personal moral code as a radical nonviolence practitioner: to uphold human dignity, to take care of the earth, and to, whenever possible, follow the path of least harm. for CONSCIOUS OBJECT, radical nonviolence means no harm or exploitation anywhere along the chain from beginning to end; earth stewardship means meticulous, responsible sourcing of the materials needed to create these pieces and minimizing the carbon required to get them from place to place.
since day one, all of my designs and packaging have been 100% plastic-free. I source my chain from one of the last domestic jewelry chain manufacturers in the US. the stones I use are also sourced in the US, and the buyers I buy from dig them out of the ground themselves. and most importantly, apart from raw materials, the only labor in the end product is my own: I hand-make every single CONSCIOUS OBJECT piece from scratch in my studio in north carolina.
